Vultures

On the way up, to Loya, I suddenly saw this huge flock of black birds gathered. I immediately thought, vultures, and there's something dead there. Since I was on the wrong side of the bus, I was not able to see any detail, nor take any pictures. I thought of this all day, wondering if I would get there with enough light to see it, and if I could get some pictures. Then I chatted with the bus driver who seemed to stop for just about any reason, people getting food or icecream and such. He finally understood what I wanted and said that he'd stop and let me take some pictures (while everyone sat in the bus waiting for me). Since I had to be polite, I did not take time to change lenses or get better pictures. I really should have changed lenses, but did not want to be rude to the other passengers. The place was already in the shadow since the sun had dropped below the surrounding mountains. So, I jumped out, quickly took a few shots and what you see is the best I could do under the circumstances.

And then, for the first time, wondering why the birds were not all over the carcass, I noticed the big dog.

He was definitely protecting what he thought was his, and the birds just waited patiently, knowing the age-old game.

My bus driver, standing, posing for a photo with a buddy of his, who was bringing a passenger up the hill, to Loya, but waited until I was done.
